Dress is too tight overall:
When shopping for a dress we generally suggest finding a dress with an overall fit that is nice on the top and worry about the length later. But when you find the dress you want you’ve really no choice if the style cannot fit your body. But no worries. Generally if you have a dress it’d be much simpler to go down in size than it is to go up in size. But if it’s too tight overall there are many things you are able to do depending on the style of the dress. If it’s too tight in the bust area you can always add in fabric to the sides or remove a zipper if there is one and create a corset like panel to the back. This isn’t something you’re able to do with an ordinary tailor so we suggest you find one with a large portfolio of work that make you comfortable with their work first and/ or try something simple. Below is something we’ve done recently. Here is the before pictures:
Our client brought in this short sequin cocktail dress for reconstruction since it was too tight around the bottom and top area. Below is the dress taken apart.
Below is a picture of the new piece of laced fabric and lining added for extra comfort
Here is our wonderful client, see how natural and hip hugging the sides are. She loved it, we were able to also able to sew in the beading to the bottom of the lace.
Reconstruction and re-sizing dresses are very normal. No matter how intricate your dress is or what can be done. We advocate for the tailoring industry, ask questions and talk about what you need done first.
